O quam glorifica luce coruscas,
Stirpis Davidicae regia proles!
Sublimis residens, Virgo Maria,
Supra caeligenas aetheris omnes.

(v. 1 of an Office hymn for the Blessed Virgin Mary, formerly used for First Vespers of the Assumption in the Sarum Rite)

O how you shine with glorious light, royal offspring of the line of David! O Virgin Mary, dwelling on high over all the citizens of heaven.

O sacrum convivium!
in quo Christus sumitur:
recolitur memoria passionis eius:
mens impletur gratia:
et futurae gloriae nobis pignus datur.

O sacred banquet!
in which Christ is received,
the memory of His Passion is renewed,
the mind is filled with grace,
and a pledge of future glory to us is given.

Text

Puer natus est nobis, et filius datus est nobis. Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis, alleluia. Verbum caro factum est, et habitavit in nobis, alleluia. (Cento from Isaiah 9:6; Luke 2:14; John 1:14)

A child is born to us, and a son is given to us. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will, alleluia. The Word become flesh, and dwelled among us, alleluia.

Text

Peccantem me quotidie et non me poenitentem, timor mortis conturbat me; quia in inferno nulla est redemptio. Miserere mei, Deus, et salva me. Deus, in nomine tuo salvum me fac, et in virtute tua judica me; quia in inferno nulla est redemptio. Miserere mei, Deus, et salva me. (Responsory for Matins of the Dead; verse from Psalm 54:1)

Sinning each day and not yet penitent, the fear of death disturbs me: for in hell there is no redemption. Have mercy on me, O God, and save me. Save me, O God, in your name, and judge me in your might; for in hell there is no redemption. Have mercy on me, O God, and save me.

Text

Rex virtutum, rex gloriae, rex insignis victoriae:

Jesu largitor veniae, honor caelestis curiae.

Tu vere lumen patriae, pelle nubem tristitiae,

Tu fons misericordiae, nobis dans lucem gloriae.

(attr. St Bernard of Clairvaux, two stanzas from Jesu dulcis memoris, hymn for the Holy Name of Jesus)

King of hosts, king of glory, king of illustrious victory: Jesus, bestower of forgiveness, honour of the heavenly court. You are truly the light of our nation; dispel the cloud of sadness. You are the fount of mercy, giving us the light of glory.

Text

Salve, salutaris Victima, pro me et omni humano genere in patibulo crucis oblata. Salve, pretiose sanguis, de vulneribus crucifixi Domini nostri Jesu Christi profluens, et peccata totius mundi abluens. Recordare, Domine, creaturae tuae, quam tuo pretioso sanguine redemisti. Amen. (Medieval prayer traditionally attributed to St Ambrose)

Hail, saving Victim, offered on the scaffold of the cross for me and for all humanity. Hail, precious blood, flowing from the wounds of our crucified Lord Jesus Christ, and washing away the sins of the whole world. Remember, O Lord, your creature whom you have redeemed with your precious blood. Amen.

Text

Tua Jesu dilectio, grata mentis refectio; replet sine fastidio, dans famen desiderio. Qui te gustant esuriunt, qui bibunt adhuc sitiunt, desiderare nesciunt nisi Jesum quem diligunt.

(attr. St Bernard of Clairvaux, two stanzas from Jesu dulcis memoris, hymn for the Holy Name of Jesus)

Your love, O Jesus, is dear refreshment to the spirit; it fills without excess, satisfying our hunger with desire. The hungry taste you; those who were thirsty before drink of you; they know no other desire except Jesus whom they love.
